The garden was constructed in 2001 and refurbished through our Garden Improvement program in 2011.
The garden features an innovative ‘keyhole’ design for ease of access for elderly gardeners. The Union Street high rise is an older persons estate with a large number of residents originally from Russia and former Soviet bloc countries.
In the 2014 Department of Human Services Victoria in Bloom competition, Union Street won the Best Communal Area category.
On 23 May 2014, Vasili Kanidiadis came to the Union Street Community Garden to film a programme for Channel 31 Vasili’s Garden to Kitchen. Twelve community gardeners enjoyed lunch together and some were filmed explaining the plants that they grow in their gardens.
