Black Forest Primary now 25

Black Forest primary's school food garden is probably Australia's oldest.

Thanks to the work of innovative and dedicated teachers, the garden integrates with curriculum subjects and features an outdoor classroom.

Here are some pics from our school gardens 25th birthday celebration. Malcolm Campbell judged the pumpkin competition and we invited the volunteers who started the garden 25 years ago. they were really happy to see it still going strong.  

I’ve got plans to extend the garden a little to make room for more fruit trees & chooks later this year.

Farmers Market for Adelaide

This October, Adelaide families will have the opportunity buy fresh food directly from producers from all over South Australia at the Adelaide Showgrounds Farmers Market.

People had been thinking about an Adelaide market for some time but it was the 20,000-strong crowd that turned up for the farmers market which formed the centrepiece of the Go Organic Festival in September last year that encouraged the Royal Agricultural and Horticultural Society (RAHS) to back the foundation of a permanent farmers market by a not-for-profit community organisation.

Zannie Flannagan, one of the driving forces behind the genesis of the Willunga Farmers Market, all-round food expert and co-author of the Farmers Market Start-up Pack commissioned by FoodSA was appointed as coordinator of the venture. Together with the Adelaide Showgrounds Farmers Market Committee and RAHS staff, she has both an office and physical market infrastructure well on the way. The market will open on 1 October and will run each Sunday, apart from the weeks of the Royal Show, from 9am-1pm.

In the tradition of farmers markets it will be a food market at which both food producers and consumers can get a fair price for food produced in SA.

The Showgrounds location is superb, with a major bike trail, the Glenelg tram line, a major rail line, numerous bus routes all converging to make it one of the most accessible sites in Adelaide. Showgrounds parking and other major infrastucture will be available and the delightful 'Dairy Lawn' and associated 'tin dairy' will provide a characterful site for the market.

SA Community Gardens Pamphlet

The ever-popular directory of community gardens in SA has just been through a complete overhaul by the SA Community Gardening Network and Community and Neighbourhood Houses and Centres Association Community Gardening Project Officer, Jacqui Hunter.

Several new gardens have been added, contact details updated, and gardens who prefer to not to be promoted removed. The pamphlet now also includes more information and contacts for people thinking about starting a community garden, including how to access the SA Community Gardening Network’s Register of Interest.
