  • Ziniberaceae
  • same family as ginger

Growth form

  • similar to ginger
  • leaves grow from stiff stem
  • elongated rhizomes in soil

Edible part

  • rhizome used as spice to flavour food; dried or grated

Propagation:

  • vegetative - sprouting rhizome planted

  • South East Asia.
